Sue Sinclair has written four books of poetry -- Secrets of Weather & Hope, Mortal Arguments, The Drunken Lovely Bird, and Breaker -- which have been nominated for the Gerald Lampert Award, the Pat Lowther Award, the Atlantic Poetry Prize and the Acorn-Plantos People's Poetry Prize. The Drunken Lovely Bird won the Independent Publisher's poetry award and Mortal Arguments was a Globe & Mail top 100 book. Currently Writer-in-Residence at The University of New Brunswick, Sinclair is studying philosophy at the University of Toronto where she is preparing a doctoral thesis on beauty.

Dr. Mackenzie Bartlett's “Mirth as Medium: Spectacles of Laughter in the Victorian Séance Room” will appear in The Ashgate Research Companion to Nineteenth-Century Spiritualism and the Occult. Eds. Tatiana Kontou and Sarah Willburn (Aldershot, UK: Ashgate). Dr. Bartlett also has an entry on “Apparition” forthcoming in Encyclopaedia of the Gothic. Eds. Kristin Domm's fourth book for children, Eagle of the Sea, has been published by Nimbus Publishers.
Dr. Chris Ferns has published "Teaching Utopia, Anti-Utopia, and Science Fiction" in Teaching Science Fiction. Ed. Andy Sawyer and Peter Wright. Palgrave Macmillan, 2011.
Clare Goulet has co-edited (with Mark Dickinson) and contributed to Lyric Ecology: An Appreciation of the Work of Jan Zwicky, a hybrid literary / academic anthology manuscript of original, solicited work, which has been released by Cormorant Books. The subject area of the book is poetics, philosophy, and ecology.

Dr. Laura Penny's second book, More Money Than Brains: Why Schools Suck, College is Crap, and Idiots Think They're Right has been published by McClelland and Stewart.
Dr. Anna Smol's essay "Think Like a Professor!: Student and Faculty Perceptions of Course Policies" has been published in the Atlantic Universities' Teaching Showcase Proceedings. She also has an essay accepted for MLA Approaches to Teaching Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Other Works, edited by Leslie Donovan. The essay is based on Dr. Smol's ENGL 1171 syllabus.
Dr. Rhoda Zuk (along with Donna Varga, Child & Youth Studies) has an article, "Golliwogs and Teddy Bears: Children's Popular Culture and 'Innocent Racism'," forthcoming in The Journal of Popular Culture.

Dr. Mackenzie Bartlett organized the first and very successful
Blurbs: Conversations about Research event on November 17, 2011.

Karen Macfarlane spoke on "The Monstrous House of Gaga" in the MSVU Faculty Research Dialogue Series on

Dr. Graham Fraser organized and co-chaired a panel titled "The Ruins of Modernism" at the 13th Modernist Studies Association conference, Buffalo NY, October 6-9 2011.
Dr. Karen Macfarlane gave a paper, "The Monstrous House of Gaga" at the biannual International Gothic Association Conference in Heidelberg Germany, August 2011. She gave a talk on the same subject in the MSVU Faculty Research Dialogue Series on October 21, 2011.

Appointments, grants, other news and activities
Clare Goulet initiated a literary reading series for the university, using the MacDonald Room, to begin in the 2011-2012 year. She was appointed to the Steering Committee of the (newly renamed) Institute of Women, Gender, & Social Justice in June 2011. She also edited manuscripts (literary/creative nonfiction) for Canadian small-press publishers in April and May 2011.
Dr. Karen Macfarlane served on the Priestly Prize Committee for best article published in English Studies in Canada in 2010. The prize was presented at the ACCUTE Annual General Meeting in May 2011.
Dr. Anna Smol received the 2011 Mount Saint Vincent Instructional Leadership Award at Convocation in May.
David Wilson developed a "Twelfth Night" app that works with his online Introduction to Literature course. It's called “The 12th Night Tester” and consists of character bios along with a quiz. The app works with all Apple products--ipod, ipad, etc. The students log on to the website and can download it on to their device.
