The English Major is part of a 20-unit degree; the English requirements are listed below. Those students who were registered in MSVU courses before July 2009 have the option of completing the old 15-unit Major or the 20-unit Advanced Major if they prefer.
English Major
(20-unit degree)
A Major in English must maintain a GPA of 2.0 in the units counted for the major.
- one full unit of introductory English (usually taken in the first 5 units of degree)
ENGL 1155 Introduction to Literature: Gender and Form (full unit)
OR
ENGL 1170 and 1171 Introduction to Lit.: Reading Lit./Historical Perspectives
(Students may not take both ENGL 1155 and ENGL 1170/1171) - ENGL 2201 Shakespeare (full unit) -- usually taken after completion of first 5 units of degree
- one full unit from the following:
ENGL 3300 Eighteenth-Century Literature (full unit)
ENGL 3355 Sixteenth-Century Literature (half unit)
ENGL 3356 Seventeenth-Century Literature (half unit)
ENGL 3361 Old English Literature (full unit)
ENGL 3364 Elizabethan and Jacobean Drama (half unit)
ENGL 3365 Eighteenth-Century British Novel (half unit)
ENGL 3375 Studies in Medieval Culture (half unit)
ENGL 3376 Studies in Medieval Literature (half unit)
Special Topics course which may be used to meet these requirements - two full units of ENGL at 2000 level or above
- three full units of ENGL at 3000 or 4000 level
TOTAL: 8 full units of ENGL.
Please note that in addition to specific department requirements, the general university requirements for the Bachelor of Arts major degree must be fulfilled.

Advanced Major (20-unit degree)
The Advanced Major degree is gradually being phased out, but students who were registered in MSVU courses before July 2009 have the option of completing this degree.
An Advanced Major in English must maintain a GPA of 2.0 in the units counted for the degree..
