GRADUATE EDUCATION
2010 OPEN SUMMER INSTITUTES
Overview
Since 1989, the Faculty of Education at Mount Saint Vincent University has provided unique learning opportunities through its Summer Institutes offerings. Founded by a group of education faculty, the Institutes commonly attract students from across the province and have drawn participants from Canada, the United States, Great Britain and Australia. Using innovative pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning, Institute instructors usually offer programs on the Mount Campus. Sometimes the Institutes are offered in more diverse settings. Depending on the Institute they choose, participants may engage in some combination of individual work, small and large discussion groups, workshops, Web learning spaces, conventional classrooms, conference settings, or even around a campfire. As the Faculty of Education has grown, so have the Institutes. This unique summer experience appeals to all educators: classroom teachers, community workers, adult educators/lifelong learners, and specialists, among other professionals.
What distinguishes a Summer Institute program from a regular summer course is its compressed format over the first two to three weeks of July. In preparation, participants are required to complete pre-course readings and/or assignment(s) in the months prior to the start of the Institute, and then engage with the material and each other while on-campus. In some instances, the instructor may require the completion of assignments after the end of the formal in-class instruction. Many Institutes incorporate various faculty members, and recreational and social activities to enhance students’ learning experience, respecting many ways of knowing and being. Participants are encouraged to enroll early, as space is limited, and enrollment is on a first come first served basis.
The 2010 Open Summer Institutes will run from July 5th to July 22nd.
