Graduate Studies in Lifelong Learning
Introduction
Since 1998 the Mount has been offering the Graduate Studies in Lifelong Learning (formerly Adult Education) in Jamaica in partnership with the Jamaican Council for Adult Education and support from the Jamaican Foundation for Lifelong Learning (formerly JAMAL). The program aims to provide academic and professional education in adult education and lifelong learning for Jamaican educators.
This is a research based program which draws upon critical, analytical, reflective and experiential teaching and learning theories and practices.
The program is designed for professionals working in adult education, adult literacy, community development, citizenship, cross-cultural learning, women’s learning, environmental education, workplace learning, post-secondary education, popular education and continuing professional development.
The Graduate Studies in Lifelong Learning program can be studied as a Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) or a Master of Education (MEd non-thesis). Each program consists of 5.0 units of study and is delivered on a part-time basis over 2 years.
Educators interested in pursuing doctoral studies and/or interested in doing an intense and rigorous research project/paper are encouraged to do their Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) which includes a thesis.
This program is accredited by the University Council of Jamaica.

Jamaican Council for Adult Education (JACAE)
The Jamaican Council for Adult Education (JACAE) is a voluntary non-profit organization. Its members are individuals and organizations involved in a wide range of adult continuing educational activities. JACAE is an active member of the Caribbean Regional Council for Adult Education (CARCAE) and the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE). JACAE involves in organizing activities related to adult education and operation of the JFLL/JACAE Adult Education Resource Center.

Master of Education Program (MEd)
This is a two year, part-time program delivered through Friday and Saturday workshops and distance learning methods. Most courses consist of two, two full day workshops per term, along with individual and group work.

Master of Arts in Education (MAEd)
This program is similar to the MEd program yet it has a thesis requirement. The thesis is 1.0 units of study and is supported by an independent study in Research Methods. A thesis student will work with their thesis supervisor on the conceptualization, production and defence of their thesis.

AdmissionAdmission Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with an overall “B” average (GPA 3.0).
- All post-secondary transcripts.
- Academic and Professional letters of reference.
- Graduate Application Form.
- $50.00 CDN Application fee payable to the Mount.
- Candidates are required to write a short essay outlining the reasons for wanting to undertake graduate Studies of Lifelong Learning.
- All students should also demonstrate a commitment to studies in lifelong learning/adult education in their professional or community roles and their work.
- Application forms are available in Jamaica at the office of the On-site Coordinator. Applications will be considered on an individual basis. Late applications will be processed if space is available.
Admission Process
All applications must be submitted to the On-site Coordinator at JACAE in Jamaica. Applications will be forwarded to MSVU to be processed and reviewed at the admissions office to ensure that the applicants meet the program requirements.
Application Deadline
Applications and fee are due by March 1.
Student Support
Students have access to a range of academic and program support through JACAE and the Mount. Each student is assigned a Program Faculty Advisor who will provide academic program advising. Students have access to the library facilities at the Student Resource Center in JFLL and the extensive on-line library at the Mount.

Students receive a WebAdvisor form in their admission packages which must be returned in order for students to receive their WebAdvisor username and password

Financial Information
Fees:
The board of governors of the Mount has final authority on all financial matters. All prices are listed in Canadian Dollars. Tuition can be paid on per course/per unit basis. Tuition fees include text books and all other reading materials.
Tuition fee (as of May 17, 2008)
Half Unit Course: $1,300.00 CDN
Full Unit Course: $2,600.00 CDN
Full Program: $13,000.00 CDN
Payments should be made in Canadian dollars, by bank draft or cheque and should be delivered to the On-site Coordinator at JFLL to be collected and forwarded to Mount Saint Vincent University.
Outstanding fees
Students with outstanding fees owing to the university will not be permitted to register, to receive transcripts, and Grades will not be issued nor they be permitted to participate in the graduation, or receive their parchments.
Graduation fee
Students must submit the graduation fee of $65.00 along with their completely filled in Intention to Graduate Form to the On-site coordinator by the listed deadline. Failure to do so can result in the student not being eligible to graduate in the coming convocation.
Registration
Students who have been accepted to the University and have met their financial obligations are eligible to register for courses. Once a student received confirmation that he/she has been accepted in to the program he/she must pay a $100.00 CDN non-refundable tuition deposit fee. This fee is applied towards tuition fees but will be forfeited if not used in the current academic year. At the beginning of their first course, eligible students are required to fill and return the Course Registration Form to the onsite coordinator at JFLL. Course registration forms will be sent to the Registrar’s office at the Mount.
Course Registration Forms are used to maintain a current student file on academic activity and progress. Failure to submit a Course Registration Form will result in student not being registered, unable to receive grades and eventual ineligibility to graduate due to missing program requirements.
Courses
Course delivery schedule of the programs are;
1. Academic year (September - August)
Courses are offered over two full day workshops twice per half unit course. Workshops are 9-5 Friday and Saturday. 4-6 weeks between workshops.
2. Practicum: September to April
The practicum usually runs between September and April and is equivalent to a full credit course. The students' Practicum Guidelines can be obtained from the Document Depot on the Faculty of Education website.
3. The Graduate Project Seminar
The students take their project as either their final or close to final course in the program. The Project Guidelines can be obtained from the Document Depot on the Faculty of Education website.
4. Spring/Summer: Institutes
The Graduate Studies in Lifelong Learning program typically offers a spring or summer institute either in Canada or Jamaica. The institutes are intensive learning experiences that usually run over a period of 10 days, with a collection of readings and assignments that must be completed in advance.

Transcripts
A student transcript is the record of academic work undertaken and results obtained while at the Mount. Transcripts are prepared and released upon written request only. When requesting a transcript, students must include their first and last name, student number and mailing address.

Graduation
Although advice is readily available on request, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure they meet the program requirements. When students are nearing the end of their program they should submit a filled in Intention to Graduate Form, also available from the On-site Coordinator along with the graduation fee. The forms will be collected and sent to the Mount to be processed by the Registrars Office.

Students who have applied to graduate will receive a Graduation pack from the Mount in the mail. This pack will also be made available on-line.
Students with financial arrears will not be able to graduate until they have fulfilled their financial obligation to the Mount.
Graduation ceremonies are held in Kingston, Jamaica every two years. Graduating students who wish to participate in the ceremony in Kingston may be asked to pay an additional participation fee. If a graduate student does not wish to attend the graduation ceremony he/she must contact the Mount's Registrar’s office and request that their parchment are to sent to them. On such occasions the parchments are couriered to the student.
