Welcome

In an effort to make the transition from your teaching career abroad to your teaching career here, in Nova Scotia, we have outlined a procedure for obtaining certification.

An internationally educated teacher must first contact the Nova Scotia Department of Education - Teacher Certification for an assessment of your credentials. For information of specific documents required from internationally educated teachers per country please visit their site for those documents. If you have all the requirements for certification you can then apply for certification through the Nova Scotia Department of Education.

If the assessment from the Nova Scotia Department of Education states that academic course work is required, you must forward transcripts from all of the post-secondary institutions that you have attended, along with the letter and assessment form received from the Nova Scotia Department of Education, to either Lynne Foley (elementary) or Colleen Blacker (secondary).

The Director of Teacher Education will review your documents to discern whether or not additional courses are required within the Faculty of Education. If additional courses are required outside of the Faculty of Education in order to meet undergraduate subject area requirements, the Director will either provide academic advise or direct you to Heather Graham Student Academic Advisor, Deans' Office (Academic) for academic advising.

You can also visit our academic calendar to learn about academic regulations & information, financial information, program descriptions, departments, programs & course listings, university facilities and university officers & personnel. Class dates, times, and enrollment can be found on-line through Webadvisor.

When you have all of the information required you must then formally apply to the university as a non-degree student. This requires filling in an application form, paying a fee and submitting official copies of all of your transcripts.

Once you have been admitted, and if you require education classes, you must bring the registration form, with the outline of recommended classes, to either Lynne Foley (elementary) or Colleen Blacker (secondary) in the Faculty of Education office, Seton Academic Center room 401, to obtain a signatures for entrance into the class. If you are required to complete undergraduate subject area course work, a signature is not required by the Faculty of Education but may be required by the appropriate undergraduate department.

It is our understanding that once you have completed the requirements of the Registrar of Teacher Certification as outlined on the assessment form, you can then apply for certification.
