Soccer is a way of life for Emily Burke. “I came to the Mount mostly to play soccer,” says Burke. “ My soccer coach from high school came here and said the Mount had a really good soccer program.”
Balancing a full time science and soccer schedule means first semester is hectic for Burke. With soccer practice four times a week and games on the weekend, a distance course helped lighten the load.
“I took stats through distance my second year. It helped me so much with my soccer schedule because I could just do it whenever I wanted. Since I am from Cape Breton, I didn’t have to worry when I went home because I could just do it online,” says Burke.
“I have super busy days, so that’s another reason the distance courses helped me out,” says Burke. “I could take my time and do them when I wanted and just make sure my assignments were passed in when they were due.”
Burke’s dad is a graduate of the Mount. His encouragement led her to take a distance course. “My dad says that distance courses help keep your focus on the straight and narrow,” says Burke. “With stats we learned everything we needed to know.”
Burke recommends distance courses for anyone who needs a flexible schedule. “I wish I could take all my courses by distance”, says Burke. “ It’s just good if you can actually make a schedule for yourself and to pick a day of the week and put time aside to do the work.”
Burke is approaching her final year at the Mount. She plans on going into dentistry after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree. She’s also hoping her final year of playing soccer at the Mount will be a memorable one. “I was assistant captain this year, and I’m hoping if I do well enough I’ll be captain next year.”
