Tips for Using Synchronous Communication Technologies
The Mount's Multi-Mode Distance courses are offered using synchronous communication technologies:
- Moodle plus Elluminate Live! (voice over the Internet)
- Moodle plus online CHAT (written text-based communication in a CHAT room)
Elluminate Live!
Elluminate Live! our online courseware that permits real-time voice communication over the Internet. If your class is via Elluminate Live!, you will be emailed instructions on how to use the system before your course begins.
Tips for using Elluminate Live!:
Enter the Elluminate Live! session a little early to allow for connection delays. You will not be able to communicate with others until your instructor is in the room.
As soon as you join your Elluminate Live!, check the volume level of your microphone and speakers.
There is a slight delay between the time that you click the talk button and when your voice can be carried over the internet. Therefore, click the talk button, wait until you see “Online” and then speak. If you do not do this, the first words will not be heard by the other students and your instructor.
Remember to click the online button when you have finished speaking.
Use the ‘raise hand’ feature if you wish to ask or answer a question that has not been directed at you.
If a communication error occurs, all students will immediately log into their Moodle class site to proceed with the class.
Chat
Chat is a live, real-time (synchronous) communication tool that resides in Moodle. CHAT uses typing to communicate.
Tips for using CHAT.
Your instructor will let you know which Chat room you will be using.
Your instructor may give you specific instructions for communicating in the CHAT room. If so, follow the instructions. Some instructors direct questions to specific students and others permit spontaneous responses.
