Instructional Television DVD Troubleshooting Tips

If you require further help after trying the troubleshooting tips below please email msvu.ca.  All lectures are recorded on DVD-R (DVD minus R) discs.

TV

These DVDs will play in virtually every DVD player purchased for use with a TV in North America, Caribbean, Japan and Bermuda (region 1).  MSVU DVDs are recorded in the NTSC format and may be incompatible with DVD players/TVs outside region 1.

Computer

MSVU DVDs will play in most  computers equipped with a DVD-R capable drive. Note, some computers may have only DVD+R drives for data backup. Such drives will not play our DVDs.  MSVU DVDs will not likely play in game consoles like X-Box, PS2 or any other game player. These game units will only play mass-produced commercial DVDs. DVDs will not play in a CD drive.

Picture

Depending on when your lecture DVD was made, there may be up to 90 seconds of blank (or black) screen after you press play. Simply  fast forward until you see the introduction start and continue in play mode.

Sound

DVD players have several different settings for the sound portion of the program. This setting is usually found under the menu option on your DVD player. If you see a picture, but have no sound, check your audio settings. When you see your audio options, select Dolby Digital in order to hear the sound of your MSVU lecture DVD.

Wide-screenTV       Our DVDs are produced in standard definition with an aspect (screen) ratio of 3:4. This setting works for all computer screens and all non-widescreen TVs. If you have a wide screen TV (16:9 ratio) you must adjust the settings on your TV menu to allow for a 3:4 aspect ratio. On high definition TVs adjust the input of your hi-def TV to accept a standard definition (SD) signal so the picture is not distorted.
