Prospective Co-op Students

What is Co-operative Education?

The co-operative education program (or better known as co-op) at Mount Saint Vincent University began in 1979 and was one of the first programs in the Maritimes. From a single co-op program in business administration, it has grown to include public relations and tourism & hospitality management.

With co-operative education your learning extends beyond the classroom by alternating terms in class with paid work terms in positions related to your program.

You will graduate with:

  • One year of relevant work experience
  • Excellent job-search, résumé and interviewing skills
  • Industry contacts with potential employers

You will have the competitive edge when looking for a full-time job after graduation. In addition to these great benefits, co-op will help you pay for your education - Average Co-op Salaries for 2011»

You will also have the chance to:
  • Explore career options
  • Travel to other provinces
  • Develop your personal and professional confidence
  • Experience with with different industry sectors across Canada

Your co-op term experience will be unique. Mount co-op students are encouraged to gain a broad range of experience and to set personal learning goals while on the co-op term.

Many co-op opportunities are located outside of the Halifax-metro area, so you should be prepared to relocate to other areas of the country to get the most out of the co-operative education program.

Wondering how Co-op works?

During a co-op term you will work for a minimum of 13 weeks / 35 hours per week in a position related to your program. Co-op terms enable you to apply the theoretical concepts you learned in class to practical career-related situations...and get paid for it!

What other Co-op Students have to say?Ashley Coffin Testimonial photo

"The Mount Co-op Program has prepared me for a career in public relations like no course ever could. Taking what I learned during class time and transferring it into the real world has allowed me to secure a job sooner as my employer knows I have the right skills to succeed."

~Ashley Coffin, BPR Class of 2010

Cassidy for testimonial"When I sat down in my first PR class at the Mount I felt like this degree had been made for me. The small classroom sizes, knowledgeable Professors, and up-to-date course materials is inspiring. At the Mount you are not just another number, you are an individual that thrives in an atmosphere where you can get involved in your classes and truly learn from the best in the business. I am able to take the skills I learn in the classroom and adapt them to real client projects. Being a transfer student, I knew what it was like to attend a large school. Now in my third year of PR I understand the quality of education I am receiving is going to push my career even further, to become the best practitioner I can be."

~ Cassidy Quinton, BPR Class of 2011

Shannon Veinotte for Testimonial"I would not be at the Mount today without the co-operative education program. Courtney Barnhill, Mount Admissions Advisor, introduced me to Public Relations in 2007 during career day in high school. Before that I didn’t know it existed. The co-op program has opened so many doors for me as I step into my career. I can only hope I will encourage potential students just as she encouraged me."

~Shannon Veinotte, BPR Class of 2011
