Hello and Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology!

Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (SOAN) at the Mount. We are a dynamic and engaged group of faculty, staff, and students who are committed to exploring and intervening in some of the most pressing social issues of our time. We are also a supportive and diverse community – a place to expand your horizons, challenge your assumptions, explore your world, and develop the critical research, analytical, and communication skills necessary to do so.

In SOAN we like to get our hands dirty and we hope you feel the same. The world isn’t something “out there” that happens to us, it’s a social place we bring into being collectively. Its promises belong to us but so, too, do its problems and we can’t wash our hands of that responsibility. Exploring all this – and understanding what and how to do about it – is what critical and engaged education is all about. It’s a journey, not a destination.

Our faculty are active and accomplished researchers and teachers but we’re not here to tell you what or how to think about the world or the problems and possibilities facing us today. We’re here to help you begin your own journey and develop the skills necessary to navigate it. Join us.
