Before you begin:
Locate your articles
- Find your article(s) using the article databases on the Article and Research Databases page
- Enter your articles in RefWorks
- Export your article(s) to RefWorks [instructions]
- You may also choose to enter your citations manually [instructions]
- Organize your citations - You may create folders to organize your article citations.[instructions]
Add your annotation
To add your annotation to the citation:
- Edit the reference by clicking on the Edit link (little pencil icon) on the far right of the reference
[This takes you to the Edit Reference page.] - Change the first drop down box, View fields used by: to APA 6th Annotated Bibliography
- Scroll down to the Annotations: box (in some versions of RefWorks you will see User 2, User 3 User 4, etc underneath)
- Enter your annotation into this Annotations box (RefWorks may or may not indicate you are User 1)
- At the bottom of the edit box click 'Save Reference'
- When you have finished adding/editing and saving your annotations click on the X (close) button on the top right corner of the page to return to the main RefWorks page.
You will notice that several of the boxes already have text, like Abstract and Notes. That text will not appear in your bibliography. Only the citation and the text you enter in Annotations (User 1) box will appear in your annotated bibliography.
It is always a good idea to check that all the information you need for your citation was properly imported.
Create your annotated bibliography
To create your annotated bibliography:
- Click on Bibliography button on the RefWorks menu bar and select "Create"
- From the Output Style drop down box choose APA 6th Annotated Bibliography
- Under Format a Bibliography from a List of References':
* Choose the type of file you wish to create, Word, Rich Text Format, HTML etc
* Choose the folder where your references are stored
* Click on Create Bibliography
* A new window will open and you will be able to download or view your annotated bibliography.
