Atlantic Universities' Teaching Showcase

Small Teaching

Exploring the Potential of Easily-Implemented, High-Impact Teaching Practices

Saturday, October 14, 2017 - Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, NS

The Atlantic Universities’ Teaching Showcase is an annual event that brings together faculty members, lecturers, academic librarians, graduate students, educational developers, and others who are interested in the quality of teaching and learning at universities in the Atlantic Region. The Showcase provides a forum to reflect on and critically examine teaching practice, to share methods and strategies, and to discuss issues related to university teaching and learning.

We are thrilled at Mount Saint Vincent University to be hosting this year’s Showcase. Our theme, “Small Teaching,” echoes the work of the keynote speaker for our conference, Dr. James Lang. In his recent book of the same name, Dr. Lang argues that focusing on easily implemented, high-impact teaching practices can greatly enrichen the capacities of higher education institutions to enhance student learning. Although it is important to think big, very often, it is the small things we do that make the biggest difference.

Have you developed or applied small teaching practices that have had a big impact at your university that you would like to share with others? Are there easily implemented strategies for course development, online learning, or in-class teaching that you think might make a difference in other institutions? Do you want to learn more from James Lang, himself, about the small teaching practices that he has found deeply impact student learning?

Join us for a wonderful day of sharing ideas, learning together, and advancing higher education teaching.

Highlights of this year’s Showcase will include:

A Keynote Presentation by Dr. James Lang, renowned author of Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning (2016) and Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty (2013).

Experiential Learning Demonstration Space, featuring examples of how experiential learning is supported at universities across our region.
