February 26, 2012: ACAA Championship held at St. Thomas University Fredericton, New Brunswick
The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics are again the ACAA Women’s Volleyball Champions. This is the second title in three years, which also captured the crown in 2010. The top ranked Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics defeated the second ranked and host St. Thomas Tommies in three straight sets to take the 2011-2012 ACAA Women’s Volleyball Championship. The title was gained in front of a spirited crowd at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym, Fredericton, New Brunswick.
The Mystics took the opening set in a convincing fashion, outscoring the Tommies 25-12. They did it behind strong blocking and spiking, while STU struggled to get the ball past the Mystics’ block.
In the second set, the Tommies took an early lead 10-5, but the Mystics reeled them back at 12-12. The set was a back and forth battle from there on. MSVU was able to get the edge they needed at the end to take the set in a very close 25-21 score.
The Mystics got off to a hot start in the third set opening with a 7-0 run with the strength of Mystics left side player, Kelcie Levesque’s serving. The Tommies battled back to make the score 17-20, but that was as close as they would get, losing the final set to a score 25-21. Top performer for the Mystics was ACAA Player of the Year, Kelcie Levesque who had 11 kills and led all players with 13 digs.
Mystics Coach Derrick Brooks, is beaming over what his team accomplished this season. “You don’t even know how proud I am, the girls played awesome. They stuck together, they practiced hard, I am so proud.“Mystics Kelcie Levesque said that she was very happy how her team came together and played. “I’m so proud we really showed up today, every one contributed we are so happy with this.” The Mount advances to the CCAA women’s volleyball championship, March 8-10 in Nanaimo, BC. | Karl Frederick - ACAA Athlete of the Week MSVU Men’s Basketball 5th year BBA Hometown: Thornhill, OntarioKarl Frederick, has been a pillar of stability as the MSVU's Men's team has managed to stay atop of the ACAA Men's Basketball standings in spite a number of injuries which has decimated the Mystics' line up in the past several weeks. Karl, a 5th year senior from Thornhill, Ontario, who leads the nation in steals, provides a solid defensive presence while helping to pick up the offensive slack as well as contributing with an increased rebounding effort. Karl will be counted on to provide the leadership and experience as the Mystics prepare for an important upcoming game against 2nd place, Holland College. |

Derrick Brooks Mentor Coach MSVU Women's Volleyball Head Coach | Jamie Brown Apprentice MSVU Women's Volleyball Assistant Coach |
Now in its seventh year, the CCAA Female Apprentice Coach Program will offer coaching opportunities to 20 apprentices training under mentor coaches in soccer, cross-country running, badminton, basketball and volleyball.
The CCAA Female Apprentice Coach Program targets female graduating student-athletes to participate in collegiate sport as apprentice coaches. The program provides grants for professional development opportunities and operational costs associated with the apprentice coach. Apprentice coaches typically aid in player scouting, team communications, training exercises, skill development and administrative duties throughout the season.
The CCAA Female Apprentice Coach program is funded by Sport Canada.
“Thanks to Sport Canada, we are able to provide apprentices coaches with education, practical experience and qualified mentor coaches,” states program chair Yvonne Becker. “It serves to increase their competencies and enrich Canada’s coaching ranks for the future.”
The CCAA’s goal is to have one female coach on the staff of each women’s sports program.
