Celebrating 20 Years -Welcome!     
The NSCA works in collaboration with many others to advance knowledge on aging-related issues. Our work includes conducting research projects and evaluation studies; organizing lectures, workshops and conferences; developing and reviewing curricula; developing educational materials such as manuals, information kits and videos; and providing consultative services to community, organizations and government. We invite you to learn more about us by viewing our current and past projects and the resources we have produced. It is our goal that through research, education and community engagement the NSCA will inform policy and practice to enhance the quality of life of older adults and their families. 

2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the NSCA and we are planning a special celebration!  On April 19, 2012 we hosted a dinner for more than 150 friends and supporters of the Centre at the Mount's Rosaria Student Centre with a showcase and reception. The guest speaker for the event was Silver Donald Cameron and emcee Olga Milosevich. Our anniversary theme is “Our Future is Aging”. We chose this theme because it captures where we as a society are headed (our population is aging) and it reaffirms the work and mission of the NSCA to generate knowledge that informs policy and practice on aging related issues.

Other anniversary events include a conference on aging being held November 21-23, 2012 and a Café Scientifique entitled "Care of Older Adults across the Continuum: Experiences, Expectations and Policy Directions" on May 10th. We are excited about our upcoming events and we encourage you to join us to celebrate our 20th anniversary. For more information on the anniversary events, please click one of the items above.

WHAT'S HAPPENING!

NSCA TO HOST CAFE SCIENTIFIQUE ON MAY 10TH: In Support of Caregivers Awareness Month, The NSCA will host a Café Scientifique entitled, "All Roads Lead to Caregiving: Perspectives on Caring for Our Aging Population" on Thursday, May 10, 2012  from 6:30 – 8:30pm at the Humani-T Cafe. Join us for an engaging and interesting discussion about an important issue. Limited space is available. Please RSVP to msvu.ca as soon as possible.

20th ANNIVERSARY DINNER—GREAT SUCCESS: On April 19, 2012 the NSCA celebrated its 20th anniversary to great success! Silver Donald Cameron (our guest speaker) gave an interesting and personal presentation. Several awards were handed out including a significant contribution by an organization awarded to the Group of IX. Bessie Harris received the significant contribution award by an individual and the highlight of the night were the awards to our student essay contest winners. Our first prize winner was Katherine O’Toole and the second prize winner was Celina Aalders.  Everyone in the audience was moved when the girls read they essays. The girls did a wonderful job and their essays were very touching. Thank you to the organizations who purchase tables, our ticket sponsors, Olga Milosevich (Emcee) and to everyone who attended the event.  Click here  to view a picture.

DR. KEEFE AT BIG THINKING LECTURES ON PARLIAMENT HILL: Dr. Keefe gave a presentation, "Who Cares? Aging Boomers and Caregiving Policy in Canada" at the Big Thinking Lectures to the Parliament of Canada in Ottawa. April 26, 2012 on the important issue of aging and caregiving policy. Click here to view the presentation.

SAVE THE DATE: Home is Where the Heart Is: Working Together to Support Seniors’ Independence. A forum on supportive services for seniors organized by the Nova Scotia Seniors Housing Network and sponsored by the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors and Nova Scotia Centre on Aging to be held Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at the Multi- Purpose Room, 3rd Floor, Rosaria Student Centre, Mount Saint Vincent University. NSCA STUDENT ESSAY WINNERS ANNOUNCED: The NSCA is excited to announce the winners of our student essay competition for students in Grades 4-6 within the HRM. The goal of the competition is to increase awareness of older adults and the contributions they make to families and society, and to foster a culture of caring and respect across the generations. The first place winner is Katherine O'Toole and the second place winner is Celina Aalders.

AGING CONFERENCE: “Our Future is Aging: Current Research on Knowledge, Practice and Policy” will be held on November 21-23, 2012. The purpose of this one-time conference is to showcase current research on aging from the multiple and varied disciplines which address the issues and opportunities of an aging population and help foster multi-disciplinary collaborations in aging research. NORTHWOOD SYMPOSIUM AND CONFERENCE: We are pleased to be a partner for Northwood's Research Symposium, "Promoting Health and Wellness in Continuing Care Through Research" which takes place on Thursday, May 24th at the Holiday Inn Harborview, Dartmouth. ONLINE WORKSHOP: The Centre offers an online workshop for health care professionals interested in better understanding the experiences and realities of family and friend caregivers.
