Mount student receives Ruth Hammond Scholarship
Congratulations to public relations student Amber Lonie, who is the 2009 winner of the Ruth Hammond Scholarship, awarded annually to a public relations student in the final year of the Bachelor of Public Relations program.
Currently awarded by Mount Saint Vincent University, in partnership with the Canadian Public Relations Society, the award acknowledges a student who has completed at least two public relations co-op work terms and who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership abilities and dedication to establishing a career in the field of public relations.
"I am very honoured to be recognized by the Ruth Hammond scholarship and I hope to mirror her lifelong commitment to public relations," says Lonie.
Since beginning her degree, Amber has completed an internship with Lethbridge College as well as with Mentum, a wireless firm in Ottawa. Most recently she worked at Shell Canada in Calgary where she was involved with strategic communications, event planning and management, donation strategy, issues research and writing.
In 2008, she was on the Mount ‘s Dean’s List and in 2007 received the Millennium Excellence Award, awarded by the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation, of which has since become a member of the board. Lonie has contributed to the establishment of the Millennium Network, which helps communities and not for profit organizations become more effective and efficient. Lonie has also served as treasurer of the Mount’s Student Public Relations Society and is a member of the Canadian Public Relations Society.
Outside of her academic contributions, Amber also volunteers with Sunday Supper, a local soup kitchen that provides meals in a non-threatening environment to the homeless in downtown Halifax.
"Amber's enthusiasm for learning, her genuine curiosity about the world around her, and her commitment to excellence have made her an outstanding student in the BPR program,” says Chair of the Mount’s public relations department, Amy Thurlow. “Amber is a strong contributor to the learning environment at the Mount and it has been a pleasure to work with her."
