Mount professor authors sixth book
Dr. Reginald C. Stuart, a Professor in the History and Political & Canadian Studies departments, recently published a book titled Civil-Military Relations During the War of 1812.
Dr. Stuart, who joined the Mount community in 1988, is the sole author of six books, co-author of two and co-editor of two. His many articles and reviews have appeared in world-renown publications and he was honoured as a Canadian-American Fulbright Scholar and Distinguished Chair in Canadian-American Relations in 2004. The same year he was the recipient of the Mount Award for Research Excellence.
In 2008, after 18 months of writing, Dr. Stuart finished his latest book, which explores the divisions that existed between military and civil officials during the War of 1812. “During that, the nation’s first international war following independence, military affairs were integrated with civil attitudes, republican ideology, the political structure and exercise of foreign and domestic policy,” Dr. Stuart explains. “Citizen politicians led the army and their goals often reshaped national policy and the conduct of war. The themes that are present in the book are basic to the United States experience and ideology.”
Writing a book is a big time commitment and Dr. Stuart recommends always having a fresh mind and to be organized before attempting to write. “You don’t always have to start on page one – just go with the flow because once you start on a subject you never know how far it will take you.”
Dr. Stuart’s passion for U.S. history began in his undergraduate degree. “I found the topic captivating and had somewhat of a romantic view towards it,” says Dr. Stuart. He advises students to go in directions you never expect because what sparks your imagination is what you should follow.
Civil-Military Relations During the War of 1812 is available by order through bookstores and on Amazon.com or Amazon.ca.
Dr. Stuart is currently co-writing a book with a University of Ottawa colleague. The book focuses on Canada-United States history into the 21st century. Dr. Stuart anticipates a winter/spring 2011 release.
