Even though it is your daughter or son making the major life change by starting university, your life is changing too. You may experience many different emotions as the year unfolds: sadness over missing your child, relief (maybe even delight!) at your newfound freedom, anxiety over your child’s new choices, surprise over his or her habits away from home—and the list goes on.
Whether it’s your first child going off to university or your last, you’re bound to shed a few tears at some point. Hang in there. We at Student Services will provide you with as much information and support about the process as we can, from the parents’ program at orientation, the parents’ handbook and this website.
Perhaps the best reassurance will come from someone who has been in your shoes:
“I can’t say enough about Mount Saint Vincent University and all of the staff who work there. Both my children attend the Mount, and both have been very happy with the way they have been accepted and treated as individuals. As a parent who never attended university myself, they have done nothing but make me feel like part of a team, and I have learned so much from talking with all the different staff members at the Mount.”
