Celebration: Women of Spirit  Café

March 4 - Women of Spirit will celebrate diverse expressions of women's spirituality and lives through drumming, song, dance, story, and visual art.

 

Café & Conversation on Loss and Light

February 16 - Lorri Neilsen Glenn, Mount Education Professor, prairie-born, Halifax-based poet and essayist will read from her recent book, Threading Light: Explorations in Loss and Poetry. She was the Poet Laureate of Halifax from 2005-2009. People are invited to bring their own stories of loss and light.

Film & Discussion: Cities of Light: the Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain
February 2 - A historical documentary that transports its viewers to Al-Andalus - where Jews, Christians, and Muslims synergized into a thriving society a thousand years ago. During this time, many literary and scientific advancements were made but clashes due to intolerance and war led to destruction and loss of diversity in Medieval Spain. This film is produced by Unity Productions Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes peace and interfaith dialogue through media. Donations from this screening will support their "Be a Peacemaker" Campaign

Panel & Discussion: Visions of a Harmonious World
February 5 -

Film: The Spirit of Annie Mae

January 26 - This film tells the story of 30-year-old Mi'kmaq activist Annie Mae Aquash, found murdered execution-style in South Dakota in 1975, against the backdrop of the Native Peoples Movement in the 60’s and 70’s, placing events in their historical context by explaining the significance of Mount Rushmore, the Fort Laramie Treaty, and Little Big Horn. It also explains why a native person from Nova Scotia was in South Dakota.

 

 

A Café of Poetry and Performance

January 19 - Shauntay Grant, an African Nova Scotian, is a writer, spoken word performer, broadcast journalist and musician. She is the third Poet Laureate of Halifax (2009/10) and has shared her blend of poetry and music internationally. Her work has been featured on radio and television across Canada and in several of anthologies. Shauntay is the host of All The Best, a weekly CBC music program. Celebration: World Religion Day

January 15 - A celebration, initiated by the Baha'is of the United States in 1950 and now observed throughout North America, will focus on harmony and unity as expressed by representatives from eight diverse religions.This event is co-sponsored with the Halifax Baha’i community. Film: Long Road to Justice: The Viola Desmond Story

January 5 - The Heart and Spirit series will launch with this locally produced film that is used in public schools to address racism and will be introduced by Education Minister, Ramona Jennex. A pivotal moment of race relations in Nova Scotian and Canadian history is brought to light.Mount professor Susan Brigham will facilitate discussion. View film trailer: Long Road to Justice (mp4)
