Heart and Spirit of Our Communities

Cultivating a Compassionate, Welcoming & Inclusive Community

The Mount is pleased to present the Heart and Spirit of Our Communities initiative with a goal to cultivate a more compassionate, welcoming and inclusive community

The initiative involves a year-long series of cafés, films and celebrations that will offer personal opportunities to meet, engage and connect with members of our diverse spiritual and cultural communities.  Along with the series, representatives from diverse community organizations will engage in "compassionate conversations", exploring open questions such as:  What is compassion?  How do we cultivate it?  Is it already happening in our homes, schools, and work places?  Could we cultivate compassion more?  Could we commit ourselves for a ten year period to further explore, develop and realize compassion as a vital element of a vibrant society?

The series and compassionate conversations will culminate in two things:

  1. A presentation to the Halifax mayor and council, proposing that HRM become a Compassionate City, which would mean committing ourselves to a 10-year Compassionate Cities Campaign (http://www.compassionatecities.org/).
  2. An international compassion conference will be held in the spring of 2013, at which time the mayor and council will hopefully declare HRM to be a Compassionate City.  If this happens, the conference will lead us into our 10-year Campaign to become a more compassionate, welcoming and inclusive community.

All events in the series are free of charge and open to all. If you are planning to attend a session, please view our campus map for directions. For more information contact Kim MacAulay, Spiritual Life Coordinator at msvu.ca or (902) 457-6446.
